Implementation Timeline

This timeline for implementing the Biliteracy Pathway Program can also be adapted for the Seal of Biliteracy awards.

Taking Inventory – Ongoing

  • Identify stakeholders at the district and school level and in the community.
  • Identify philosophy for language learning and review goals of program.
  • Identify assessment practices and how to collect data to determine if program is meeting its goals.
  • Identify accolades system in place
  • Appoint a program coordinator to oversee the Biliteracy Pathway Program. At the high school level, this person can also coordinate the Seal of Biliteracy. Large districts with many schools may need more than one coordinator.

Planning & Communication- Fall/Winter

  • Meet with all stakeholders about the upcoming year.
  • Inform students and parents of the language assessments, certificate criteria and celebration plans.
  • Identify funding sources, timing and proctoring for partner language testing.
  • Identify how you will award certificate and recognize students.
  • Collect data about which languages you will assess.
  • Plan which assessment will be used to demonstrate English and partner language proficiency.
  • Familiarize yourself with retake policies (from the testing company and/or your own district.

Assessment – Winter/Spring

  • Administer partner language assessments and/or gather evidence of proficiency.
  • For students who are using the portfolio option, collect work samples.
  • Collect data to monitor program effectiveness and equity.
  • Submit award data on this website so the LOC can report on Biliteracy Pathway Certificate awards statewide.

Celebration – Spring

  • Present the Biliteracy Pathway Certificates to students.
  • Celebrate the accomplishments of your students and the linguistic diversity of your school community.
